DEWA

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) was formed in 1992, by a decree issued by the late Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum to merge Dubai Electricity Company and the Dubai Water Department, which had been operating independently before then. DEWA has made considerable achievements, to be ranked as one of the best utilities in the world. DEWA provides services today to over 930,000 customers with a happiness rate that reached 95% in 2018. The UAE, represented by DEWA, maintained its first global ranking, for the fourth year running, with scores of 100% in all Getting Electricity indicators in the World Bank’s Doing Business 2021 report that measures the ease of doing business in 190 economies around the world. DEWA reduced its losses from electricity transmission and distribution networks to 3.3% compared to 6–7% in the US and Europe. Additionally, DEWA achieved the lowest customer minutes lost per year (CML) in the world of 1.66, compared to 15 minutes in Europe. DEWA managed to decrease water network losses from 42% in 1988 to 5.1% in 202020, compared to 15% in North America, which is one of the best results in the world. DEWA continues its efforts to upgrade Dubai’s entire water network by replacing old connections and meters with new ones, and developing the transmission and distribution networks as per the highest international standards. The smart adoption rate of DEWA’s services reached 93% by the end of Q1 2019, and in 2018, the customer happiness rate reached 95% in 2018.

About the Innovation Centre

DEWA’s Innovation Centre is located at the heart of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. The solar park is the largest single-site solar park in the world and is based on the Independent Power Producer model. It has a planned generation capacity of 5,000 MW by 2030 and will save over 6.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually upon completion.

The Innovation Centre is a clean technology innovation hub that promotes a sustainable energy future in the region. At the Innovation Centre, DEWA raises awareness about sustainability, while building the nation’s capabilities and competitiveness. The objectives of the Centre are as follows:

  • Promote latest innovations within the field of clean energy.
  • Develop skills and build the next generation clean technology innovators.
  • Host events, conferences, seminars, and workshops to facilitate capacity building.
  • Build strategic partnerships with academia and industry enable research and knowledge sharing.
  • Support the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 to diversify the energy mix and supply 75% of Dubai’s total power output from clean energy.
