Preventing Migration of a Small Molecule Through a Film

Challenge overview

The Seeker is looking to prevent the migration of an amine through a film under harsher than normal conditions (e.g. high temperature). Solutions could take the form of a film change/treatment, a substitute for the amine or anything else that could prevent migration without losing qualities of the product. 

This Theoretical Challenge requires only a written proposal.

Unit Dose detergents (packs or pouches) are liquids (or solids) inside of a water soluble film. The formulation must have a very low water content to ensure the product remains intact until use. This requirement does not allow saponification of surfactants by hydroxides. This is done with another nucleophile such as an amine like mono-ethanolamine (MEA). The small MEA migrates into and through the film under more severe conditions such as higher temperatures. Prevention of migration into and through the film is the goal of this Challenge. 

This is a Theoretical Challenge that requires only a written proposal to be submitted. The Challenge award will be contingent upon theoretical evaluation of the proposal by the Seeker. 

To receive an award, the Solvers will have to transfer to the Seeker their exclusive Intellectual Property (IP) rights to the solution. However, the Seeker will be willing to consider a licensing agreement for a partial award if exclusive IP cannot be transferred by the Solver. 

Submissions to this Challenge must be received by 11:59 PM (US Eastern Time) on October 9,2016. 

Late submissions will not be considered.
